Northdene Prep’s own ‘Karate Kid’ shows he has the right skills to compete in nationals

Young Shahid Jugree follows in the footsteps of his family elders by heading to national karate champs.

NORTHDENE Prep lad, Shahid Jugree, participated in the South African JKA (Japanese Karate Association) National tournament which took place at the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg from 24 May.

Shahid attends the Queensburgh JKA dojo based at the Westpark School hall on Stella Road, Malvern.

The instructor at the dojo, Sensei Alan Naiker said Shahid is well disciplined on the karate floor and is always putting immense effort and hours of practice into his training.

“His respect towards his instructors and encouragement towards his fellow students is exemplary,” said Naiker.

The Sensei said after watching Shahid’s performance in the KZN JKA trials where he won gold in both the Kata and Kumite category, he knew his young charge was on the way to follow in the footsteps of his equally talented father, Sunil and, elder brother, Yash, all of whom have been trained in the martial art by Naiker.

At the nationals, Shahid will join another two students from the Queensburgh JKA dojo, siblings, Kayla and Alex Ruthnum together with the rest of the KZN JKA Karate team next week.

Naiker said the SA KJA is historically highly considered as students from the dojos tend to perform very professionally at the event which is held on a massive scale.

“It’s always a pleasure to see how disciplined and well managed a karate tournament of this magnitude is conducted,” he said. “From all of us at the Queensburgh JKA Karate, we wish Shahid and the team everything of the very best.”
