Friends of K9 give back one ‘SNIP’ at a time

One of the statistics that drives the organisation is that in a period of only six years, a female dog and her litter can produce up to 67 000 puppies and the numbers increase exponentially from there.

FRIENDS OF K9 Trust, a group of local residents with a great passion for dogs and the neighbouring disadvantaged community, has to date sterilised and vaccinated more than 50 dogs through their initiative, Spay Neuter Inoculate Project (SNIP).

The Hillcrest based trust was established in 2016 and officially registered in 2018 and is currently targeted at the Embo, Molweni and Shongweni community.

According to one of the trustees of the organisation, Michelle Brown, one of the statistics that drives the organisation is that in a period of only six years, a female dog and her litter can produce up to 67 000 puppies and the numbers increase exponentially from there.

“We believe that sterilisation is the most effective approach in curbing the number of homeless animals that will end up living on the street, malnourished and neglected. We also support and work with other NGO’s or organisations involved in animal welfare, which we believe has a greater effect and reach than working alone,” she said.

Funds were donated to kickstart the SNIP project which is focused on sterilising and vaccinating homeless/street dwelling dogs in order to try and slow down the explosion of unwanted litters from unsterilised dogs.

Volunteers identify the dogs in need, pick them up and transport them to a vet in Assagai and the dog and family receives a bag with dog treats and some essentials that the family might need to survive.

All funds received was used on the 53 dogs that were treated this year and the organisations appeals to the public for more donations in forms of cash, dog food and treats and household items for the families that the dogs belong to.

“An amount of R650 is used on each dog for the medical procedure, we would appreciate even people who could donate their services and time to the project,” said founder, Debbie Smith.
The trust has also set up a Back-a-Buddy account under the name Friends of K9.
