Glenpark community unites to raise funds for tree feller

Elijah was robbed of his chainsaw by a man who promised him work.

KINDNESS and community spirit prevails among Highway people who often go out of their way to help each other.

The Glenpark community rallied together to raise funds for Elijah Danana, a tree feller in the area who was robbed of his chainsaw.

Elijah has been in the Glenpark area for about four years trying to make money to feed his family by cutting trees.

“It was just a normal day and this man picked me up with a private car and said he needed someone to cut two trees for him. He told me he worked for Bellair SAPS and I trusted him.”

The man stopped at a garage and gave Elijah R50 to buy a cooldrink and bread at the shop. “I went in and when I came out, the car was gone with my chainsaw and my bag with other items I use.

He said there was nothing he could do as he did not know which direction the driver took, so just returned to his spot.

“A man came to ask me what happened. He then spoke to his wife who shared my story on the residents’ WhatsApp group,” said Elijah.

A good Samaritan, Simone Young, who was touched by this story, started a campaign to buy Elijah a new chainsaw.

“I know what it like to have nothing and be broke. I have also received help in my life when I was down and out. This is his work, he has a family to take care of,” said the kind-hearted Simone.

“With the help of residents, we raised R900 and another resident, Mike, organised for Elijah to get a new chainsaw and its accessories from Robbies Mowers in Pinetown who were more than happy to help.”

The money was given to Elijah who was able to buy himself a new bag and some food for his family.

Elijah thanked all the people who helped him get a new chainsaw. “I truly appreciate their help,” he said, relieved he has a means to get work.
