Baby dies, mother saved following birth at Hillcrest shopping centre

Sadly the baby died, but the mother is reportedly recovering in hospital.

A WOMAN who went into labour unexpectedly at a public toilet in a Hillcrest lifestyle centre on Thursday morning was tended to by paramedics and her infant’s death was declared by medical personnel.

According to Shawn Herbst, spokesperson for Netcare 911, paramedics assessing the infant said the baby was fully developed but had not survived.

“The 25-year-old lady told paramedics that she thought she was about six months pregnant,” said Herbst.

“Apparently she went to the toilets upstairs from the restaurants but didn’t expect to go into labour.”

Herbst said she had given birth to what they described as a fully-formed baby but had not yet delivered the placenta.

“The paramedics declared the baby dead on the scene and managed to stabilise the mother before she was transported to a hospital for further treatment.”

According to Capt Terence Soobramony from Hillcrest SAPS, the scene was attended by police from Hillcrest SAPS and an inquest has been opened following the infant’s death.

The centre’s landlord declined to comment except to say they had done everything they could to help the woman and save her life.
