A river runs through Pinetown family’s garden

The family said the municipality does not seem to have solutions for them.

A PINETOWN family has resorted to asking assistance from the Highway Mail after being told by a municipality worker that a stream that is destroying their property belongs to them.

Their problems started in March last year when their fence got damaged from a flow of water from a stream and the situation is getting worse as their yard is slowly being absorbed by the stream.

Martie Kichenbrand said they moved to their daughters’ house following lots of break-ins during the day time when there is no one at home. “The criminals were using this fence that is falling over to gain access to the property,” explained Martie. The stream is not the only thing that is damaging their property as there is also a blocked stormwater drain opposite their gate which results in water seeping into their yard.

“With these heavy rains now, we are scared this situation is going to get worse. We cannot even relax outside or have visitors over because of this muddy damp yard, someone is going to get hurt,” said Martie.

Martie’s husband, Vivian, said they do not even know where the source of this stream or river is and it puzzles them that the municipality would say this is their problem and that they should sort it out.

“Municipal workers have been here a couple of times, but no one seems to have any solutions,” he said.
