Elderly Queensburgh man assaulted after crash, dies in hospital

An elderly man is in a coma in hospital after allegedly being beaten at the scene of an accident near the Caltex filling station in Queensmead, Queensburgh. His family are asking for witnesses to the attack to come forward.

UPDATE: THE Queensburgh News was informed on Thursday morning that Shan Naicker died in the early hours of Thursday morning while still in the hospital.

THE family of Shan Naicker, who is in hospital in a coma after being allegedly assaulted following an accident in Queensmead industrial area, has been called to his hospital bedside after being told his condition has worsened.

Naicker, 69, the director of a Queensburgh business, is believed to have lost control of his bakkie on Piet Retief Road due to a medical condition.

His nephew, Leven Naicker said the elderly man was assaulted by the driver of a forklift which was hit by Shan’s vehicle due to his accident on Monday, 4 March.

“My uncle is a harmless 69-year-old cardiac patient,” said the distraught nephew who contacted the Queensbugh News asking for help with gathering information about what had happened to his uncle.

A post on social media on Monday afternoon which has since been deleted alleged that Naicker had been beaten by a man at the scene. Screenshots of the post describe Naicker being beaten repeatedly.

The screenshot describing the attack was shared on the Queensburgh News Facebook group on Monday just before midday.

Leven Naicker said the family had opened up a case against the man who had beaten his uncle.

Anyone with information which might be helpful, including CCTV footage of the incident is being asked to come forward by the family.

“We also need pressure to be put on for this case to be treated as serious,” said Leven on Wednesday morning. “It is incomprehensible that an attack of this type can have no witnesses when it took place in a busy area. Maybe we need the community to march outside the police station before it will make a difference.”

Police at Malvern SAPS have been unable to offer any comment on the case at present although being contacted by the Queensburgh News.

This is a developing story. (Updated on Thursday, 7 March)
