Connor flies for Giba

Connor Terblanche is on track to make big waves in the BMX racing fraternity this year as he hopes to take his racing to the next level and compete in the World Champs in Belgium. We spoke to him on his 17th Birthday about his plans.

FLYING the flag high for his club, Giba BMX, Connor Terblanche was just one of many talented racers who took to the dirt tracks at Queensburgh BMX Club to fight it out for the title of club champ between Pietermaritzburg, Queensburgh, Lahee Park, and Giba BMX clubs.

The day was thrilling with a few riders finding it tricky to stay on their bikes but no serious injuries occurred to keep anyone off the track for their three races and the final to determine who would lift the A and B team trophies. While the visitors from Pietermaritzburg ultimately took both the trophies home, the day was full of excitement as riders in each category vied for position over the bumps, ramps and bends.

Terblanche, who began racing when he was just five-years-old in 2008, has already come a long way in the sport. His highest achievement so far has been to rank third in the world in the U12 Cruiser class in 2014, and fifth in the world on his 20-inch bike while racing in Belgium in 2015 when he was 13 years old.

He has been racing for Giba since 2017. “My plans are to make the final SA squad and compete in the Junior Men’s Class this year in Belgium,” he said this week when the Highway Mail spoke to him on his 17th birthday on Tuesday (19 February).
