Kearnsey rakes in several sporting victories

Kearsney raked in water polo, basketball and golf wins against Westville Boys' High School.

Water polo
Kearsney’s 1st water polo team took on Westville on Saturday and hoped to repeat their success in the top 10 tournament last year.

Kearsney started with aggressive front line play that resulted in two early goals. Westville settled into their rhythm and put pressure on Kearsney’s tight defence by driving. They were rewarded with exclusions and scored two goals of their own. Kearsney’s Tyson Andrews responded with a well worked goal.

The 2nd chukka was hard fought as Westville continued a strong driving game. Kearsney’s defence gave them few opportunities. Good scrambling and goalkeeping was all that kept the Kearsney attack from scoring a handful of goals. The Westville hole man was then red carded for a vicious kick and Kearsney duly scored from the resulting extra man. With a weakened Westville attack, the momentum was firmly in favour of Kearsney, who put in a few extra goals and began to dominate the game.

The 3rd chukka saw a quick start for Kearsney and before long it was 10-4 in their favour. Kearsney created opportunities but struggled to finish. Westville preyed on the counter attack and scored a couple of goals against the run of play. Good goalkeeping and an alert defence kept Westville at bay. Then it was Kearsney’s turn for a major mistake as inexperience led to two successive penalties for Westville. This brought the score to 10 – 8.

The 4th chukka saw both teams become loose in their defence and a number of opportunities were created for both sides. The teams traded goals throughout and, with time running out, it looked like as if Westville would make a remarkable comeback. However, after a timeout with two minutes to go, Kearsney showed much more control and closed out an entertaining game.

The final score was 12-11 to Kearsney.

Westville found second gear in the second half and came strongly at Kearsney. Despite their best efforts, Kearsney players held on to win the game 57-49.
