WBHS honours Nestor Pierides with gala

School renames gala to Nestor Pierides, a teacher from the school who recently passed.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School celebrated and remembered Nestor Pierides’ passionate involvement in swimming at WBHS, at the renamed Nestor Pierides Invitational Gala.

His passion was sport at Westville Boys’ High School, finding, developing and nurturing sportsmen across the board, but particularly in swimming.

It was only fitting that the school won the gala convincingly, beating 11 other schools, including Grey College, St David’s and St Benedicts. Westville repeated this feat on Saturday at the Alan Burt Gala.

The school was also honoured to have Nestor’s wife, Glenda, at the gala, to present the awards.

According to principal, Trevor Hall, Nestor Pierides has left an indelible impression on Westville Boys’ High School. His premature passing after a short illness came as a shock to everyone in the school community.

“He was an icon in education who loyally served WBHS for more than two decades. Before beginning work at WBHS in May 1997, he had earned a reputation as an educator, sports coach and deputy principal of considerable substance who never failed to add value to the organisations he served.

“During a time of rapid change in education, Nestor played a vital role in helping WBHS to retain the confidence of the school community. He was consistently strong on emphasising the need for good character and discipline and served as a mentor to teachers, coaches and boys who will never forget him. He also had a softer, compassionate side which was particularly evident in his dealings with others in need of that approach,” said Hall.

The principal added that apart from his broad influence, he played an integral role in the development of WBHS sport, particularly in swimming and in the annual invitational gala hosted at WBHS.
