Palmiet ranger retires after 43 years

Jeremiah Sihlangu had been working at the Palmiet Nature Reserve since 1976.

PALMIET Nature Reserve said goodbye to one of its best and most dedicated field rangers, Jeremiah Sihlangu, on Friday, 1 February.

Sihlangu had been working with the nature reserve since 1976.

“I enjoyed my job very much, it had its challenges, but all I have are good memories,” said Sihlangu.

His work included patrolling, educating and caring for the natural habitat.

Sihlangu will now return to his home town Dududu, a small rural area in the south coast, where he will start farming, gardening and herding his cattle again.

Former co-worker, Phillip Mnembe said he worked very well with Sihlangu and learned many things that he applied in work and life.

“He taught us a lot, especially how to carry ourselves at work, we will miss him,” said former co-worker, Tholakele Dimba.

Jean Senogles from the Palmiet Nature Reserve Management Committee said she has never come across such a dedicated ranger. “He has been a fine ranger, we couldn’t have asked for a better ranger,” she said.

The reserve celebrated Sihlangu’s departure with a braai and he was awarded his certificate for his long service.

“We will all miss him and we wish him all the best for his retirement,” said conservation manager at Palmiet Nature Reserve, Sthembile Ngobese.
