Everything is set for the registration weekend

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial electoral officer of the Electoral Commission, Mawethu Mosery urged citizens especially young people to register to vote.

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed on Tuesday, 22 January that everything is set and ready for the registration weekend which is Saturday, 26 and Sunday, 27 January from 8am to 5pm.

Addressing journalists at a media briefing held at the IEC provincial offices in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial electoral officer of the Electoral Commission, Mawethu Mosery, said all 4 886 voting stations will be opened on both days.

“On these days, the IEC staff will be available to assist potential voters to register, re-register, verify their registration status, check or update their address details. Registration material has also been distributed to commission’s local offices based at local municipalities.”

He said although the commission is happy with the number of registered voters which are more than five million, they are a bit worried about the small number of young people who are registering for the first time.

“Only 170 578 of young first time voters have registered to vote so far so we urge them to come forward. Young people aged 16 can register to vote, but will only be allowed to cast their votes at the age of 18,” said Mosery.

Another concern that Mosery had was the fact that women make a higher percentage of voters on the voters’ roll compared to men.

“When we looking at dates for registering, we also look at the weather and we are pleased that no severe weather is anticipated in the province this weekend. However, contingency plans are in place should the weather unexpectedly change,” explained Mosery.

To register, you must be a South African citizen who is 16 years or older, and must bring either a valid, green bar coded South African ID document, a smart ID card or a valid temporary ID.

Voters can also SMS their ID number to check their registration status. To find your correct voting station, visit the VS Finder page on the IEC website www.elections.org.za.
