Fabulous reads – Koontz mystery thriller disappoints

Book review - The Silent Corner by Dean Koontz.

The Silent Corner, Dean Koontz, Jonathan Ball Publishers, ISBN: 9780345545992

I WAS genuinely excited to get my hands on Dean Koontz’s The Silent Corner, which had the potential for a great female lead in a mystery thriller.

And, while FBI agent Jane Hawk was without a doubt fearless, strong, beautiful, intelligent and determined as she set off to unravel the mystery behind her husband and thousands of other happy and seemingly successful people’s sudden and inexplicable suicides, I found her character shallow.

She was just, in my personal opinion, not endearing.

I found it strange that I rather fell in love with many of the side characters who assisted her in her mission – some of whom did not even feature in an entire chapter.

Koontz’s writing style can also be excruciatingly slow at times, as he often includes information that really was not necessary in the grand scheme of the story.

Despite the fact that the chapters do pick up with some excitement along the end, it was indeed a chore to complete this novel.

To add salt to the wound, the ending was anticlimactic.

Koontz had built up an expectation of an impossible mission and a face-off with merciless, cold-blooded, tough-as-nails villains. But, this was not the case.

The Silent Corner ends with a cliffhanger leading into the next book in the series, The Whispering Room.
