Project empowers youth to succeed

Thirty three youth from the Valley of 1 000 Hills were chosen to take part in the empowerment project.

THE waste management company, EnviroServ, spent more than R3-million to sponsor the studies, through learnership, of 73 unemployed youth around the country.

In KwaZulu-Natal, 13 unemployed learners from KwaNdengezi, 10 from Dassenhoek and 10 from Shongweni were selected to join the learnership programme.

EnviroServ Group’s training manager, Neville Moopanar, said learnerships addressed skills that were scarce and critical within the organisation, industry or sector and would contribute to employability.

“Learnerships equip learners with both theoretical and workplace learning interventions that lead to occupationally based qualifications that are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority.”

The sponsorships cost about R45 000 per learner and include all training costs, trainer fees, stationery, stipend and catering for the year.

After three months of theoretical training, some of the learners are placed at EnviroServ offices nationally.

Moopanar said when asking young unemployed persons what held them back from entering the job market, the resounding response was employers requiring people with experience.

“Our learnership programme ensures young people have a sound academic foundation as well as valuable work experience, making them viable candidates for employment.”
