Kloof & Highway SPCA gives rescued emu a ‘happy-ever-after’

Upon arrival at the SPCA, the emu was immediately offered food and water and a few minutes later, it was calmly surveying its new surroundings.

A STRAY emu was rescued from a residential premises in Assagay by Kloof and Highway’s SPCA field officer, Doctor Mthobeni and trainee inspector, Israel Silevu, recently.

Speaking about the rescue, Kloof and Highway SPCA’s marketing and fund-raising officer, Brigitte Ferguson, said, “We received a call earlier that afternoon about an emu running up and down the caller’s fence in a large open field outside her premises. Silevu who promptly attended to the call, quickly called for reinforcements as an emu in full flight can run up to 50 km/hour and he knew he had a daunting task on his hands.

“After Mthobeni had arrived, the emu ran into a large property where the chase continued. Mthobeni and Silevu tried to catch the emu. Just as the guys thought they had the emu cornered, it jumped over a low fence into a neighbouring premises and the chase was on again. Our two staff members are not known for giving up and after an hour and a half, the emu was gently and safely loaded into a SPCA vehicle. On arrival at the SPCA, it was immediately offered food and water and a few minutes later, the emu was calmly surveying its new surroundings.”
