Teenage girl dies after falling into Hillcrest ravine

First responders found the teenager, in a critical condition, at the bottom of a 35-metre cliff on Galloway Road.

DESPITE the brave attempts of Durban SAPS Search and Rescue, Metro Police Search and Rescue and other organisations, a teenage girl who fell into a ravine in Hillcrest last night (28 October) had died.

After hours of gruelling team work the rescuers managed to pull the girl up the cliff on Galloway Road in Winston Park, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, said Netcare 911 liaison officer, Shawn Herbst.

However, this morning he confirmed that she had sadly died around midnight.

Members of the Durban SAPS Search and Rescue, Metro Police Search and Rescue and other organisations worked together is difficult, low light conditions to rescue the teenager.

“Reports from the scene indicated that a teenage girl was found at the bottom of the 35-metre cliff.  She was assessed on scene by an advanced life support paramedic and found to be in a critical condition.”

Herbst said the girl was treated on scene and a technical rope rescue system was set up by the Netcare 911 SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, Metro Rescue and Rescuetech to safely bring her to an awaiting ambulance.

“She was transported by another private ambulance to hospital,” he said.
