Fabulous reads – Madcap novel promises devilish fun

Book review - Grandma Dangerous and the Dog of Destiny by Kita Mitchell.

Grandma Dangerous and the Dog of Destiny, Kita Mitchell, Pan Macmillan

WHEN Ollie’s explorer dad disappears in some remote part of Australia his safety-conscious mum decides to go looking for her husband, and reluctantly leaves the young boy in the care of his favourite grandmother – aptly known as Grandma Dangerous.

When his mother then also suddenly vanishes without a trace Ollie, one of his classmates, Piper, his pet hamster, Myrtle and a supposedly rare and lucky dog named Rose are roped into a unbelievable and daring rescue mission.

The elaborate and motley crew of characters is what really makes the story!

From the not-so-typically-sweet Grandma Dangerous who has lost one leg in a hot air balloon accident, who brashly ignores rules and boundaries, and tells one too many fibs, to the dastardly, publicity obsessed Australian hotel owner – who you will love to hate.

The sassy Piper, who blissfully ignores Ollie’s condescending attitude towards her is also a treat.

The madcap story was well thought out and features some hilariously odd moments. Kita Mitchell’s Grandma Dangerous and the Dog of Destiny makes for an exciting and enjoyable adventure for kids aged eight to 10 years, however, adults can also expect a giggle or two.
