Hammarsdale man sentenced for rape

Two women, aged 26 and 78 reported separately, that while they were crossing the main road, they were grabbed by a man who dragged them into the bush and raped them.

A 23-year-old Hammarsdale man was sentenced to 31 years imprisonment by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court earlier this month for three rape cases that occurred in April 2009 and March 2012.

Zama Silent Vilakazi of eMalangeni Reserve was found guilty of rape and robbery of three women in the bushes near Hammarsdale main road.

“In April 2009 two cases of rape were opened at Hammarsdale where two women, aged 26 and 78 reported separately, that while they were crossing the main road, they were grabbed by a man who dragged them into the bush and raped them. The 78-year-old woman was also robbed of her cellphone, R400 cash and cigarettes. In March 2012 another woman reported that she was raped, this time by three men, while she was walking from Hammarsdale main road towards Zibuse village. She was also assaulted for saying she didn’t know a local gang called ‘Big Nuz’,” explained Manqele.
