Sewage stench raises health concerns

The sewage has reportedly been running down Crompton Street for three weeks.

WITH the exception of the foul odour permeating the intersection of Crompton Street and Park Lane in Pinetown, business owner, Neela Padayachee, is concerned about the possible health implications of a sewage overflow.

“This has been going on for three weeks and the smell has been getting worse,” said Padayachee.

“The health inspector needs to do a site visit as it is just so bad. It must be bad for your health to have all this sewage running down the road.”

She said her customer base has diminished drastically as they would prefer to rather cross the road before they reach the smell.

“Then there are the cars that drive through it and splash it up the sidewalk,” said the disgusted businesswoman.

Ward 18 councillor, Melanie Brauteseth, said, “I have noted the problem and will be working with the relevant officials to find the solution. It is unacceptable that the infrastructure in Pinetown has deteriorated to such a point that such a state of affairs is possible.”
