Riders rally to raise funds

Dozens of MTB riders geared up for a 30km race through KwaNyuswa at the weekend.

THE work done by Sifundo Dladla has ignited a spark of passion in the young and old alike in KwaNyuswa.

His Village-2-Village cycle tour fund-raiser is now in its second year and continues to grow in strength and support.

“The mountain bike challenge is about trying to get children, from 10 years and older, to take part in a healthy, physical activity. Many children don’t have the opportunity to take part in any of the other events outside the valley and this is my way to help them grow and give them a passion for the sport,” he said.

For now there are only male members as there is a stigma in the area regarding female riders, a stigma he is trying to desperately to debunk.

“Cycling is not just for the young! We even have a few older riders, some from 50 years and up. They do it to keep fit and healthy. It’s our motto, healthy you, healthy living,” said Sifundo.

The 30km route runs from Slindile Primary School, past Shalela to Mkhizwane and back to the starting point.

The race is hosted to raise funds for his non-profit organisation, Empathy for the Community. The NPO focuses on sports and recreation, arts and culture, tourism, skills development, animal welfare and agriculture.

If you have a second-hand mountain bike you would like to donate, contact Sifundo on 084 924 8194 or e-mail dladlas91@yahoo.com.
