UPDATE: Kloof SPCA confirms Westville rabies case

The stray dog found in Palmiet Drive last week would have suffered the most terrible death had it not been found, said the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA said a sad decision to immediately humanely euthanase the stray dog that was found in Palmiet Drive and send it to be tested for rabies had to be made after observing its behaviour.

The SPCA received a call to collect the dog last Wednesday.

Kloof and Highway SPCA manager, Barbara Patrick said Inspector Petros Simamane went to collect the dog and was very concerned about the dog’s behaviour when he saw it and while it was in the back of his vehicle going to the SPCA.

“The dog ate a catch pole and net and was attacking the corner of the vehicle which alerted Inspector Simamane. On arrival at our SPCA, Inspector Simamane immediately called other staff to check and assess the dog and everyone was concerned about its behaviour.”

Patrick said a sad decision was made to immediately humanely euthanase the dog and send it to be tested for rabies. “The only way to test for rabies is to test the brain.”

“On Thursday afternoon, we received confirmation from the State Vet that the dog had been tested positive for rabies. This dog would have suffered the most terrible death had it not been found and may have infected other animals or people,” she said.

Once again, the SPCA appeals to members of the public to ensure their pets are kept in secure properties, are microchipped or have another form of identification, and importantly are vaccinated annually, including against rabies.

“There is no cure for rabies and we currently have a serious outbreak in the KZN area and every pet owner has a responsibility to protect their pets and other people against being bitten,” added Patrick.
