HILLCREST Primary School took the top spot in the Checkers Big Voices for Little Garden Competition and won R30 000 as its video went viral on social media.
Nina Alborough, the junior primary music specialist, was made aware of the competition and immediately started putting ideas together for the school’s music video.
Once approved by management, it was full steam ahead. Even with the choreography finalised, there were a few tweaks made on the day that only enhanced the performance of the learners.

As the school had worked with him before, SA’s Drone Ranger, Dave Leppan, was enlisted to help shoot the video. Checkers chose the main song and, to add a personal touch, Alborough had the talented learners perform The Cup Song and showcased the school’s djembe drummers to the world.
“There were only a few weeks to practice and because of the enthusiasm of all of the learners, we had all Grade 2 and Grade 3 children involved,” said a proud Alborough.
The school’s principal, Raj Kemraj, said, “This whole venture was not just a way to get our school community together but to include the whole Hillcrest community as well. We had Alpine VW become involved with sharing and liking the video and had hundreds of people talking about it. There were votes coming in from across the globe. Well done to our learners and the music department and thank you to everyone who voted,” said Kemraj.
The school was crowned as the winner, and along with the number one spot received a R30 000 prize. The video received the most likes on the Checkers website page.
