No end in sight for Kloof gorge road woes
Kloof and Forest Hills residents have voiced their ongoing safety concerns regarding heavies using Kloof Falls and Bridle Road.
MOTORING along the narrow Kloof Gorge roads is tricky enough without the added safety risk of suddenly finding a huge truck trying to manoeuvre around a corner.
Since September 2015, the issue of heavy trucks using Bridle Road and Kloof Falls Road in Kloof has been a hotly contested subject among local residents.
Members of the Forest Hills 1 Community Watch met with the Highway Mail to voice their concerns as well as the possible solutions to ensure heavy vehicles no longer use this stretch of road.
Simon Brehany said the current signage, which states that 9-ton trucks may use the road, should be changed and that trucks weighing no more than 5-tons should be allowed access.

“Signage needs to be placed on the M13 in Kloof at exit 22, 23, 24 and 26. The signage that was there previously stated that only 7-ton trucks were allowed access on the road and about a year ago, this was increased to 9-tons,” said Brehany.
Other residents voiced their safety concerns as trucks had previously caused traffic jams as well as accidents on the tight bends along Bridle Road.
“I would hate to know what would happen should a double-link truck lose its brakes when going into Kloof along Bridle Road,” said Jonathan Kelsey. “It is a serious hazard and concern. Something needs to be done.”
The Ward 10 councillor, Tex Collins has his say:
“I want weight and size restrictions placed at the start and exit of Accutts Drive as well as at the entrance to Kloof Falls Road at the St Agnes Church to the top end of Bridle Road. The tonnage can’t be more than 5-tons. It should be restricted. I have already written to ETA and there has been no response.”
