Kearsney dominates at Clifton 7s

The local team beat Hilton College in a nail-biting final game, 27 - 24.

KEARSNEY College had a great day at the Clifton 7s festival as they remained unbeaten throughout the day and claimed a win against Hilton College in the final.

In the pool section’s first fixture, Kearsney edged St Charles to 20-19. Deep into the second half, St Charles was leading 19 – 15 and close to scoring again to end Kearsney’s chances to qualify for the play-offs. Thanks to some resolute defense, Kearsney managed a penalty turnover. They scored a try from the penalty to narrowly edge ahead to win the game.

The remainder of Kearsney’s pool games were won against the Barbarians team (39 – 5) and Michaelhouse B (21 – 12).

In the semis, Kearsney played hosts Clifton and had to work hard for their 24 – 10 victory.

The final was against a determined and focused Hilton. Kearsney started poorly and was 5 – 0 down within 50 seconds. Both teams scored two tries in the first half and Hilton lead 12 – 10 going into the break.

The second half saw another five tries in this epic battle, as both teams played their hearts out. Hilton scored with less than a minute to go and took the lead 24 – 22.

Kearsney gathered the kick off and kept the ball to eventually go over for the winning try.
