Hillcrest man receives suspended sentence for child pornography related charges

The National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Kara said the state plans to make an appeal.

The state is considering appealing the suspended sentence given to a Hillcrest man who pleaded guilty to a total of 1550 counts of child pornography related charges.

The accused was arrested late last year and was sentenced at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Tuesday, 31 July.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Natasha Kara said the accused was sentenced to five years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years with conditions, including a condition that he must pay R80 000 to an identified NGO in Pinetown.

“The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in KwaZulu-Natal, Adv. Moipone Noko is considering calling for a transcript of the judgement and sentence to understand the decision further. An appeal is an option we have at our disposal (pending the DPP’s perusal of the aforementioned documents),” said Kara.

This follows a similar case in which a Waterfall man, Jacquees Rheeder (35) and a Durban man,  Tiaan Malan (31) were each given a five year prison sentence for Child Pornography at the Durban Magistrate’s Court last month.

Rheeder was arrested in 2016 after child pornography images were found at his Riverview Road home, while pornographic images of minors where seized from Mala’s Ridge Road home in 2017.

Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
