Triple win for Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club

The Upper Highway team are looking forward to taking on the South Coast Warriors this weekend, the deciding game of the season.

THE Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club took on the Jaguars Rugby club in two nail-biting away games on Saturday.

With the challenge of this weekend’s South Coast Warriors games looming, the focus was on claiming a win, the bonus point and resting some key players.

The 2nd team shot off to a speedy start as they played an expansive game, running in a number of tries. After a couple of more tries at the beginning of the second half, the game was unfortunately called short as the opposition ran out of substitutes.

The 2nd XV walked off with a final score of 43-0 and man of the match for this fixture went to Liam Conway and Chaise Mclaughlin.

In the 1st XV team encounter, the game was a scrappy affair as both teams battled to hold onto the ball for long periods of time.

The Villagers’ kept the scoreboard ticking over and went into the break leading 24 – 0.

After a sluggish start in the second half, the Jaguars quickly struck back as they ran in a couple of tries, benefiting from some unforced errors made by the log-leaders.

Fortunately the Villagers knuckled down and put the game to bed as they ran in some late tries to finish the game off as victors with a score of 44 – 19.

Man of the match awards went to Trevor Mvundura and Matt Cele.

On Friday night the Hillcrest Villagers’ 3rd XV played the Westville Old Boys’ 3rd XV at the Jimmy Bellows sports ground.

The Villagers dominated the first 20 mins but mistakes prevented them scoring several tries and WOB went ahead 5 – 0 with a well worked cross kick try.

The Villagers were stung into action and played to their game plan, dominating up front. This led to space out wide and a try and conversion for Clifton Bridge that saw the Villagers lead 7 – 5 at half time.

The second half was more of the same as the strong Villagers’ outfit scored two more tries by Kyle Walters and Brian Lewis and a further conversion from Bridge to win 19-5. Man of the match went to Brian Lewis and Wes Volek.

The Villagers’ 3rd XV will play in an away fixture against table topper Northwood Crusaders on Saturday while the 1st and 2nd XV will play in away games against the South Coast Warriors.
