Youth invited to be bowled over

Bowls provides a number of health benefits and Westville Country Club is opening its green to anyone, especially young people who wish to play or know more about this game.

AS June is Youth Month, Westville Bowling Club will hold a Bowls Awareness Day at the Club on Saturday, 9 June.

“There are currently a number of youth players at clubs throughout the Port Natal District with the better players been selected to represent the District at Under 15, Under 25, Under 30 and Open level,” said Nigel Hawkins for the Westville Bowling Club.

“The main aim of the day is to introduce the youth (anyone under the age of 35 years) to the sport of Bowls to ensure that are able to continue playing our sport competitively for the foreseeable future.”

Hawkins said the game of bowls has been around for centuries and the sport provides a number of health benefits, including: improved fitness, improved co-ordination and skill development, increased confidence and self-esteem, enhanced mental well-being, low risk physical activity because it is low impact, social discourse a with a friendly crowd and community connectedness and support.

“Bowls passes the four requirements for healthy exercise, that it be regular, systematic, suited to the individual and fun, making it the one Sport for Life”

There is no entrance fee and the only stipulation is that no heeled shoes are to be worn, flat shoes or barefoot only.

While the club hopes to introduce the youth to this great game, anyone who wants to learn about bowls is welcome to attend which will be held at the club, 1 William Lester Road, Westville on Saturday, 9 June at 1.30pm.
