Concern should be escalated

Letter to the Editor - week ending 1 June, 2018.

WHILE visiting the mall (Watercrest Mall) a couple of weeks back, I noticed that the glass security panel that should have been in place to prevent accidents was missing on the escalators outside of Checkers on either side of the lifts going down to the car park.

I was alarmed that a small child could fall and slide through the hole and would end up two full floors below in the car park.

I reported this to the management office in the centre at that time.

Watercrest Mall’s centre manager, Michelle Gerber, responds:

We have referred the matter on to an expert and the balustrade meets the minimum requirements as set out by the National Building Regulations and Building Standard Act.

The incidents which have occurred in the past at other shopping malls were under different circumstances and do not relate to this query. Our shoppers’ safety is our priority and we appreciate the concern shown by this shopper in question.

As a matter of good faith, our contractor will be looking at possible options due to the query raised by our customer. This will then be implemented, should it be possible.
