Dual awards highlight Open Door’s success

While the organisation's ongoing work has been acknowledged, it is in need of financial aid. Show your support by making a donation.

IN acknowledgement of its sterling work within the community, the Open Door Crisis Care Centre and its director, Thora Mansfield, received notable accolades.

Thora said she felt privileged for her organisation to be recognised by the Department of Social Welfare and Development when she was handed a certificate of appreciation by the deputy minister of the department, Hendrietta Bogapane-Zulu, at a gala evening recently.

The certificate noted the department’s appreciation for the excellent service provided by The Open Door in providing care, support and safety for victims of crime and violence.

This is the 19th award the local non-profit orgnisation has received for its work within the community.

In spite of its many challenges, the NPO has offered counselling and psycho-social services to more than 400 000 men, women and children.

To honour her continued work, the Rotary Club of Durban Bay awarded Thora with the Paul Harris Fellow.

“I was both very moved and feel privileged to receive such a high commendation. It has been issued to Prince Phillip, Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Teresa and I honestly don’t feel worthy to put my name next to theirs,” said the organisation’s passionate director, Thora.

“This has to be my most coveted award and I am deeply honoured.”

And, the centre’s shelter has been accredited to accommodate victims of gender-based violence as well as human trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The centre is in desperate need of new or second-hand vehicles in a good condition.
