Hillcrest couple celebrate golden anniversary

Hillcrest couple, Sheila and Dave Stokoe celebrated their 50th anniversary on Friday, 20 April.

THE seven-year age gap between Sheila and Dave Stokoe, who celebrated their 50th anniversary on Friday, 20 April, did not prevent the couple from tying the knot and living life to the fullest.

David met Sheila at his best friend’s wedding where he was best man and Sheila was a bridesmaid as the bride was her older sister.

“When we were still in school, we made a vow that we would be best man at each other’s weddings. My friend was not convinced about me taking an interest in Sheila as she was only 18 and I was 25. The age difference did not change the way we felt about each other and we have had very interesting years,” said Dave.

Sheila said she was taken by Dave as he was good-looking and a genuine man from ”Natal”.

“We dated for two years before we got married, I was living in Cape Town at that time and he was in “Natal” so we communicated through letters. I wrote him more than 300 letters during that two-year period and I received 240 from him,” said Sheila.

Sheila and Dave Stokoe were wedded in Cape Town on 20 April 1968.

The Hillcrest lovebirds said when they got married they did not think as far as celebrating a golden anniversary.

“This is truly a blessing, we really believe that our faith in God has bound us over the years. We are very committed to our church and the congregation is our second family.

“Being good friends and having each other’s best interests at heart has also played a huge role in our marriage,” said David.

As a marriage counsellor, Sheila said fighting is part of a couple’s life, “we also fight but you have to communicate. People give up easily and my advice is do not give up. Stick at it, stay there and communicate.”

The couple has two children and five grandchildren, love going into the bush, cycling, running, visiting game reserves and they enjoy a walk together every morning.
