Hillcrest’s 1st XV continue victory streak

Both the 1st and 2nd XV have a scheduled league bye but you can catch the 3rd team take on Westville Old Boys RC at home on Thursday night.

THE Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club hosted the recently relegated premier division outfit, the South Coast Worriers, on Friday night at the Durban Shongweni Club.

In the 2nd XV match, the home side established early dominance by commanding the lead which the team held on to until the final whistle.

The players showed that despite their single loss this season, they have begun to re-establish their winning 2017 form. The final score was 29-10 to HVRC. Man of the Match went to Greg Nortje (forwards) and Patrick McNeil (backline).

The 1st XV match proved the KZNRU first division league would continue to be a heavily contested affair. Villagers were slow out of the starting blocks and SCW claimed a 22-12 lead at half-time.

It became clear the home side were left with 40 minutes to produce something special to claim victory. A monstrous fight-back ensued and HVRC claimed a remarkable 29 – 27 win. Man of the Match went to Kyle Spowart (forwards) and Tommy Bezuidenhout (backline).

Coach, Mike de Kock, praised his side for their colossal comeback during the game. He needed to say very little at halftime as his side knew their mistakes and what needed to be done and there was very little time left to do it in. Mike also praised SCW on their performance and sportsmanship.

Villagers 3rd XV kicked off their 2018 Season in the KZNRU 4th Division against the visiting Toti RC.

The 4th division has been dominated by Toti for many years and the local team showed they were up for the challenge. The final score of 17-15 went to Toti. Man of the Match was awarded to Jacques Gey Van Pittius (forwards) and Johno Hammond (backline).

Villagers’ 3rds will play the Westville Old Boys RC at the Durban Shongweni Club on Thursday night at 7pm.

The Villagers’ 1sts and 2nds have earned well deserved break this weekend with a scheduled league bye. Their next match is at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg against the PMB Collegians RC on Friday, 4 May at 7pm.
