Infant’s body disappears from Pinetown Mortuary

The body of the seven-month-old baby was taken to the Pinetown Mortuary on Monday, 26 March, but when the family went to fetch the body on Thursday, it was nowhere to be found.

A CASE of theft of a corpse was opened at the Pinetown Police Station after the body of an infant went missing on Thursday, 29 March.

The body of the seven-month-old baby was taken to the Pinetown Mortuary on Monday, 26 March and the postmortem was done on Wednesday, 28 March.

Pinetown Cluster communications officer said when the family went to fetch the body on Thursday, it was nowhere to be found.

A worker from the mortuary, who asked remain anonymous alerted the Highway Mail about the theft and said this was the first time such an incident has occurred there and it is very disturbing.

“Personally, I would like to see this matter being investigated thoroughly as there are so many odd things happening in this place that the department needs to investigate.”

The worker said the family of the parents are originally from Lesotho and spent thousands to transport the body which went missing.

“I really feel that this matter is not being dealt with, with the urgency it requires and I feel sorry for that family; a body cannot just vanish into thin air,” said the worker.

The Highway Mail tried to get comment from the family and sent the Health Department’s communications officer, Ncumisa Mafunda, emails and called numerous times, but there had been no response at the time of going to print.
