Gillitts couple toasts to 50 years together

Fifty years after walking down the aisle, Eddy and Lynne Barker look back at their time spent together

EDDY and Lynne Barker (nee Young) will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Friday, 20 April and 50 years after walking down the aisle, Eddy and Lynne Barker look back at their time spent together.

The couple first met on a blind date which was organised by friends at a hotel in Berea Road.

It was at that moment that a spark between the two lovebirds was ignited and before they knew it they were married.

The couple said their vows at the Assumption Parish Catholic church in 1968.

Eddy served in the Navy ACF from October 1963 to December 1972, he also worked as a councillor at the New Germany Council while employed as a production manager in Pinetown for 25 years.

He is also an avid golfer who got a hole in one in 1998 at the Cato Ridge Golf Course.

Lynne, a home executive who dedicated all her time to her husband and three children, Hayley, Kevin and Wendy said, “I believe I was blessed to be home to be there for our children.”

In 1996 they took over ownership of Bears Pre-Primary School in Ashley which has been flourishing for 22 years under their ownership.

In her younger years, Lynne enjoyed dancing and passed down her passion for dancing to her two granddaughters.

The couple has eight grandchildren who are the light of their lives.

Eddy and Lynne have lived in the Highway area for most of their married life; they relocated to Cape Town for a year and a half but returned and are now living in Gillitts.

They believe that lots of patience and honesty is the key to a successful marriage and look forward to spending the rest of their lives together.
