Westville celebrates triumphant win against Michaelhouse

Westville Boys' High School won every rugby match against Michaelhouse on Saturday.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School could not have asked for a better start to their winter sport season, winning every rugby match against the Midland’s Michaelhouse boys and losing only one hockey match.

Westville’s 1st XV got off to the best possible start after scoring from a beautiful phase attack. They went through a few neat phases and stretched Michaelhouse to leave Nqubeko Mkwanazi with a clear run in to the try line for a five point start with no conversion.

One could be forgiven for assuming that it would be a dominant performance from Westville after such a start, but Michaelhouse regrouped and fought back valiantly to take the lead with two tries of their own. Their forwards were proving to be quite a handful for the Westville defense and they were getting good momentum around the fringes of the ruck. Of their two tries, only one was converted. Westville replied with two tries before half time. The first was a penalty try after Michaelhouse illegally stopped a powerful Westville mall on route to the try line. The other was an incredible bit of handling and interlinking. The ball ended up in Josh Forsyth’s hands who passed a long pass inside to twin brother Kyle Forsyth to score. Dylan Labuschagne converted to take Westville into the lead at half time 19-12.

The second half was full of more drama with Westville scoring a try through Deon Slabbert. Michaelhouse then took advantage of some careless defense on the blindside with an unconverted try on their own. They followed this up with a penalty to take the score to 26-20. Westville showed true resilience when Michaelhouse came with a wave after wave attack. The team held on and twice held up the Michaelhouse attack when they had crossed the try line. You could sense that Westville had won a big psychological battle and with Michaelhouse still wondering how they had not scored again, Westville somewhat against the run of play went on to score a try through Teague Loelly at the death of the game. No conversion took the end score to 31-20.
