Fabulous reads – Colours of a killer

Book review - The Boy Who Saw by Simon Toyne.

The Boy Who Saw, Simon Toyne, Jonathan Ball Publishers, ISBN: 9780007551637

I LOVE crime thrillers – if that has not yet been made clear by my previous book reviews – and Simon Toyne’s The Boy Who Saw is definitely on my list of favourites.

It follows the tale of the enigmatic hero, Solomon Creed, who is trying to discover the truth of his identity.

His only clue is the label inside his perfectly fitted jacket which leads him to a tailor, Josef Engel in France.

However, he is too late.

When he arrives at the tailor‘s home he discovers that the old man has been brutally tortured and killed.

Police find him at the crime scene and he is instantly marked as a suspect.

Engel, who was one of four tailors who survived the Holocaust at Die Schneider Lager (The Tailor’s Camp) concentration camp, is found with a Star of David carved into his chest and rats chewing at his body.

The murderer also left a bloody message written in German against the tailor’s wall – Finishing what was begun.

Fearing for her own life and that of her seven-year-old son, Leo, Joseph’s granddaughter, Marie-Claude, teams up with Solomon to find the other survivors and hopefully uncover the killer.

What I love most about the Toyne’s latest fictional tale is how it combines the reality of the devastating Holocaust with Solomon’s unbelievable abilities of strength, speed, mind control and seeming immortality.

Leo’s synaesthesia, the ability to see emotions as colour, also adds a sense of magic to the story.
