Plastic is fantastic for Kloof SPCA

Donate your plastic milk bottles to the Kloof and Highway SPCA and it will receive recycled garden furniture or much-needed funds.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA encourages residents to take part in its recycling project, in partnership with Environ Timbers

Environ Timbers uses high density polyethylene (HDPE) in the manufacture of recycled garden furniture and the local animal shelter’s staff and volunteers have collected hundreds of washed, empty plastic bottles.

“The bottles have a specific identification on the bottom that is a triangle with the number two in it. Some examples of these bottles are milk bottles and a few household detergent bottles, such as Sta-Soft,” said the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s marketing and fund-raising officer, Brigitte Ferguson,

Once the bags are full, they are collected, weighed and recorded. When the target has been reached, Environ Timbers will donate recycled garden furniture or a monetary donation will be made to the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

Head of recycling at the Kloof SPCA, Sheena Louwrens, said, “We appeal to the community and any visitors to the Kloof and Highway SPCA to please drop off washed, empty bottles in our collection bin. This is next to our guard’s security hut on our driveway. This will help raise much-needed funds for the animals in our care and support the Kloof and Highway SPCA in our efforts to become more environmentally conscious.”

Items recycled at the Kloof and Highway SPCA include tin cans, paper, bottles, glass and books.

Highway residents can drop off their recycling from Monday to Friday between 8am to 4pm and on Saturday from 8am until noon. The paper, book and glass domes can be found on the bottom paddock below Marilyn’s Tea Garden.
