Policeman arrested for robbing woman in New Germany

KZN's Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, said the arrest would serve as a warning to criminals who hid behind the SAPS badge.

ONE suspect was shot and killed, another was arrested while a third escaped after an allegedly robbed a woman in New Germany.

On Friday, 2 March at about 5.30pm, a 28-year-old woman was walking along Dinkelman Road, when a silver Hyundai with three occupants stopped next to her.

“At gunpoint, the suspects forced the victim into the vehicle. They robbed the woman of her cell phone. She managed to open the door and got out of the vehicle,” said KZN SAPS spokesman, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

A police officer from eThekwini Inner and Outer West Cluster Task Team witnessed the incident and pursued the robbers to Clermont.

“The suspects fired shots at the police officer, who retaliated, fatally wounding one suspect,” said Gwala.

With the help of the K9 Unit another suspect, who is a police officer stationed at KwaMashu, was arrested. The third suspect fled the scene.

The 27-year-old suspect appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court today on charges of robbery and attempted murder.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, praised the police officer for his quick reaction in responding to the robbery.

“This incident once gain proves that police are strategically placed to tackle criminal activity in our society. This arrest will serve as warning to other criminals who are hiding behind our SAPS badge. The vast majority of our police officers are principled and will not hesitate to arrest any person who commits crime. Nobody is untouchable,” he said.
