Slam dunk for Waterfall’s Channing

Waterfall College's SPAR Star of the Month - February 2017.

WATERFALL College’s Grade 11 learner, Channing Barr, is its SPAR Star of the Month.

Channing has reached the next level of the KZN trials for his chosen sport of basketball.

He explained that for the trials, various schools from across KZN play a series of basketball games and only 12 players of the 30 are selected for the regional trials.

A Midlands and Coastal U18 team is then created.

Channing sees this as his greatest achievement to date and hopes to make the team. He is the first Waterfall College learner to be selected at this level.

Channing’s proud parents, Wayne and Shelley, said, “He loved all sports at primary school and received accolades for swimming, rugby, athletics and basketball for being in the 1st teams. However, it is basketball that he has chosen to continue in high school, along with his 7s Rugby.”

During his down time, he enjoys music, travelling, body boarding and spending time with his friends. His career plans include project management in construction. His reason for this was simple, “I don’t want to work in an office. I prefer the outdoors.”

Coach Nkosingiphile Bhengu has known Channing for seven years as he coached him at Highbury for the U11A and the Highbury 1st team and then the U14A team at Kearsney.

“Channing gives everything he has during practice. He has been pushing himself to be a better player. He is very easy to coach, has good manners on and off the court as well as good sportsmanship.”

Liam Smith, the sports co-ordinator at the school noted that Channing recently played in the basketball trials at Crawford College, where the school’s 1st team won 42-33 against Crawford.

Channing’s mom added, “I think that basketball, being the fast-paced sport that it is, makes it exciting and teaches you to think quickly on your feet and to be a team player.

“He also enjoys the culture of the sport and follows the NBA (National Basketball Association) in America. I think it would be a dream for Channing to actually attend a game in America.”

Waterfall College’s principal, Jeanette van der Merwe, said, “We wish Channing the very best as he continues to strive for his personal goals in the game of basketball, which has become a real drawcard for our boys at Waterfall College.”
