Banele makes a record-breaking splash

John Wesley School's SPAR Star of the Month - February 2018.

GRADE 7 learner, Banele Ngcobo (right), has been a learner at John Wesley School since Grade R and is the school’s chosen SPAR Star of the Month.

Banele has embraced all aspects of school life, especially sport, where he has excelled in both soccer and swimming.

Although he considers soccer his favourite sport, he recently broke the U14, 50 metre freestyle swimming record in a time of 36.50 seconds at the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Schools Sports Association (KZNCSSA) zonal swimming gala at Lahee Park.

Banele will also participate in the KZNCSSA swimming trials and hopes to improve on his current record.

He lives with his mom, dad and younger brother, Asanda, a Grade 4 learner at John Wesley School.

He has two older siblings who are both independent and are no longer living at home.

Banele attends a church in KwaMashu where he is very active in the youth programme. When not at school, home, or church, Banele enjoys watching action movies and playing soccer with his friends.

Although he is sad to be leaving John Wesley School at the end of 2018, he is determined to focus on his maths and language skills to further his studies as a software engineer after high school.

When hearing of Banele’s future ambitions, his Grade 7 teacher, Ryan Reed, said, “Banele is a gentle and kind-hearted young man who always displays enthusiasm and perseverance when pursuing his goals. I have no doubt he will continue to succeed in anything he puts his mind to.”

Banele added that although his parents are his biggest supporters, he credits his Grade 2 teacher, Beryl Turner, as the teacher who has influenced him the most over the past eight years. Mrs Turner’s continued encouragement and support throughout his schooling have motivated him to strive to reach his full potential, both on and off the sports field.
