Kloof Village Mall SPAR goes green

The Kloof Village Mall SuperSPAR has made the move to ban the sale of plastic packets from its store front.

KLOOF Village Mall SuperSPAR has made a change for a better, cleaner future as it has banned the sale of plastic packets from its store front.

The popular store now only sells brown paper bags as well as reusable fabric bags.

The move was made official on 1 December last year and store manager, Chad Wilson, said it has been met with a mixed response.

“We made the decision for the future of the planet as there are 8.5 billion tons of plastic in the world and only 10 per cent of that is being recycled. Sea life is currently being killed off by plastic packets and if you want to see a change, it is to be the change you wish to see,” he said.

Plain brown paper bags retail for R1.60, while those with handles will cost you R2 per bag.

The store also sells reusable fabric bags for R10.

Chad said the store makes no money from the sale of the bags as they are sold from cost-to-cost.

The Highway branch of WESSA has applauded the move to ban the sale of plastic bags.

Chad said they are currently sourcing environmentally friendly options to introduce throughout the rest of the store.
