Corrupt electricity officials arrested in sting operation

The public is cautioned to be on their guard when they are approached by corrupt officials.

TWO eThekwini Municipalty electricity department officials visited a Malvern home to disconnect the electricity with the intention of demanding a bribe for thereconnection.

The officials threatened to disconnect the electricity if the homeowner did not pay them R5 000.

According to Malvern SAPS communications officer, Radhika Marimuthu, the homeowner contacted the police station who mobilised the various units into action.

“A sting operation was then set up by police and the officials were arrested and charged for corruption. The suspects were remanded in custody,” said W/O Marimuthu.

The public is cautioned to be on their guard when they are approached by corrupt officials.

“Contact your local police immediately. Every state official works within a mandate which does not include corruption on any level. Further, all state officials are remunerated for their job performance and soliciting monies from the community is definitely a no-go zone,

Capt S N Khambula, the acting station commander of Malvern SAPS, said they have a zero tolerance policy to all crimes and criminals and anyone in violation will be dealt with according to the prescripts of the law.
