Community help arrest hijackers in New Germany

One of the suspects died in hospital after he was beaten by the community.

ONE of the two suspects who was arrested for a hijacking in New Germany died in hospital on Monday.

Dumisani Zwane (40) was under police guard at RK Khan Hospital following his assault by community members  on Otto Volek Road on Saturday.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, said it is alleged a man parked his company car along Goshawk Road, in New Germany Industrial Park when he was accosted by three armed men who demanded the keys to his vehicle.

“They were armed with a knife and a firearm. The man gave them the car keys and one of the suspects got into the car and drove off leaving behind his two accomplices.

“The other two tried to flee on foot, and onlookers gave chase and caught up with them. The police were called to the scene and found the two men who had been beaten up by the community.”

Both men were arrested. The police recovered the vehicle abandoned at KwaDabeka cemetery.
