Fabulous reads – If you can’t make it, just fake it

Book review - Becoming Betty by Eleanor Wood.

Becoming Betty, Eleanor Wood, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781447278382

Lizzie Brown is feeling drab and believes this is because of her geeky clothes, average grades and mediocre friends. She wants and needs a change.

The first item on her to-do list is a complete makeover. Well, technically it is the fourth step, but this is the most exciting part of reinvention right?

At 16, Lizzie wants more from her life and that very well may include joining a band. There is only one shortfall – she can’t play a single instrument. She’d also like to become cool but doesn’t know any of the popular kids.

To make her dreams come true, Lizzie sets out on her own forced journey of self- discovery. This novel is filled with the angst of adolescent relationships and tenuous girl friendships making Becoming Betty a sweet story about trying to fit in and changing it all to do it.

If this book had a hashtag it would be #britgirllit. It’s rare to find an enjoyable YA book with depth and I’m happy to say that this one had it. The immaturity of the characters are suitable for their age and the character progression is realistic and fun to watch throughout the book.
