Inaugural triathlon event unveiled

The event is set to attract athletes from all over the country.

LOCAL resident and well known triathlete, Glen Gore has gone one step further by becoming racer turned triathlon event organiser. Gore has launched what could potentially become one of the most iconic triathlon events in South Africa right here in sunny KZN.

Due to take place at Midmar Dam on the 2, 3 and 4 February, the MiWayLife 226 Brick Challenge will attract athletes from all over the country as they converge on the KZN Midlands to compete in this special event

Dubbed the 226 because competitors will tackle a 3.8km swim on the Friday, then cycle 180km on the Saturday followed by 42km on the Sunday, all adding up to the sum total of 226km. There a shorter race if one can call the 113 short. 1.9km swim/90km bike and 21km run over the same format as the 226

I wanted to bring the sport of triathlon back like it was in the old days, I am talking the pate eighties and nineties here. My event will allow wetsuits no matter the water temperature which we know the vast majority of the athletes will love.

“At my race, there are no cut-off times for each discipline which means a lot more athletes can compete and measure their fitness levels over these type of distances. The biggest draw-card is the fact that at my race, we are allowing personal seconding to take place.”

At modern races these days, outside assistance normally results in disqualification. Not at my race. Like back in the good old days, we encourage the family/spouse/friends/club mates to get involved and assist their athletes with nutritional and moral support.

“No other event in SA offer this type of race format or race rules. We have also ensure that the entry fee is not that steep when one compares it to all the other triathlon events over similar distances. Times are tough and we wanted to make triathlon affordable again. We have some great athletes coming but hope the local community will sign up in droves and come support this event which is sure to grow well into the future”.
