#MatricResults2017: Kearsney celebrates consistent excellence

Once again, Kearsney College has some outstanding IEB Matric results, with one boy achieving 8As, four with 7As and six with 6As.

KEARSNEY College has again achieved outstanding IEB matric results, for the seventh consecutive year almost doubling the national IEB distinction rate in mathematics and more than doubling it in physical science.

Highlighting its consistent excellence in these subjects, 46.9 per cent of Kearsney boys who wrote mathematics attained distinctions (compared with the national average of 26.5 per cent) and 35.8 per cent in physical science (compared to 17 per cent in IEB schools).

Two thirds of boys who wrote maths and physical sciences at Kearsney achieved an A or B.

The school’s 125 matric learners achieved an impressive 267 distinctions between them – an average of over two distinctions each – and more than 31 per cent of Kearsney boys achieved three or more distinctions.

The school also achieved a 100 per cent pass rate, with an outstanding 97.66 per cent Bachelor’s degree pass (university exemption).

David Comrie achieved eight distinctions, including 100 per cent for engineering graphics and design (EGD). As Kearsney’s dux and 1st team squash captain, he was in the top one per cent in South Africa for three subjects: EGD (100 per cent), mathematics (97 per cent) and physical science (93 per cent).

Four boys from Kearsney received seven distinctions each – Calvin Engelen, who was in the top one per cent for physical science and history, Dom Ferri, Bradley D’Eramo and Alexander Veldman, who was in the top one per cent for mathematics, physical science and information technology (IT).

Luca Ferri, Ntinga Tshabalala, provincial hockey player Nic de Beer, head of orchestra Emil Loubser, Robert McConnell and 1st team canoeing captain Matthew Pitcher who reinforcing the school’s emphasis on balance, each received six distinctions.

Twin brothers Dom (7As) and Luca (6As) Ferri did their parents proud by achieving 13 distinctions between them and both being in the top one per cent in South Africa in history. Dom achieved 93 per cent and Luca 91 per cent. Dom also placed in the top one per cent in physical sciences with 93 per cent.

Kearsney headmaster Elwyn van den Aardweg said this extraordinary set of results followed two recent national benchmarking awards.

“During 2017 the University of Pretoria presented Kearsney with an award for excellence in mathematics and sciences; and, as the year closed, three Grade 11 boys placed in the top one percent of over 3 000 candidates in the national IEBT benchmarking test for Mathematics,” said Van den Aardweg.

“We’re exceptionally proud and it’s a wonderful way to wrap another outstanding year.”
