Cancer survivor tackles school like a champ

Supported by his principals, teachers and fellow students, Jedey has thrived the past couple of months. Missing so much school, Jedey needed a specific syllabus to help him slowly start getting back into his academics.

MOTHER of a cancer survivor, Kerusha Naidoo, hosted a gratitude party to thank her son’s school for it support throughout his journey with treatment to being cancer free.

Jedey Naidoo (13) attends Excel Academy in Northdene and is always surrounded by teachers and friends that love and support him.

Jedey had been battling cancer for the past six years and recieved the all-clear and is finally in remission.

According his mum, he couldn’t have a formal education for six years due to his diagnosis and relapse.

“I tried to have him at a home school learning centre which caused more damage to him. Eventually I stumbled upon Excel Academy.

Their numbers were full but the academy sensed my desperation and arranged a private tutor, drafted a syllabus for Jedey and has transformed him into an energetic, enthusiastic and confident learner in a matter of weeks,” she explained.

Supported by his principals, teachers and fellow students, Jedey has thrived the past couple of months. Missing so much school, Jedey needed a specific syllabus to help him slowly start getting back into his academics.

A special programme was created for him by the school to help him and he gets aid from a tutor.

The road was not always a smooth one, and some were not happy about having a child with cancer being admitted to their school.

According to Cara Noble, CANSA National relationship manager for service delivery, it is not easy for children to be reintegrated back into school life. “They have missed out on so much and it is only through the support of school’s and teachers that we can help these children thrive again. We would like to thank Excel Academy for standing by Jedey and for setting an example to other schools to take hands and help us help these children,”” she said.

CANSA Tough Living with Cancer Children’s service has walked the journey with and Jedey for the past four years.

CANSA National advocacu co-ordinator, Lorraine Govender, spoke to the children and gave them some good tips to help them stay healthy and well.
