Malvern SAPS remembers brave K-9 unit dog, Terror

The brave canine became ill in August this year and died in the presence of his loving family in November.

FALLEN hero Terror, from the K-9 unit, was a force to be reckoned with in the Durban South Umlazi K-9 Unit and at his official medical boarding last July, was saluted as a valued member of the SAPS.

According to Malvern SAPS communications officer, W/O Radhika Marimuthu, in 2008 Sgt Kershan Naidu was handed the handsome Terror as his K-9 partner. Terror, with a distinct personality of his own, and with the tough K-9 training soon honing his skills, became this sharp, powerful partner to Sgt Naidu.

Terror served in the SAPS from 2008 to July 2016 and notched many a success on his K-9 collar.

Together with Sgt Naidu, he scoured the trails and his formidable sense of smell tracked many a suspect in the dense bushes.

According to Sgt Naidu, Terror would pursue a suspect relentlessly in the bush, his determination high, never giving up until he apprehended the suspect.

“Renowned for his incredible nose, Terror also tracked firearms and explosives. Together with the explosive unit, he swept clean many an arrival and departure hall and venue making it safe for dignitaries, The President, VIPs or heads of state.

During bomb scares, Terror would diligently walk the entire area sniffing for explosives,” said W/O Marimuthu.

Sgt Naidu and Terror worked at the country’s most prestigious events which included the 2010 World Cup, Afcon Cup and Cop 17.

Terror and other units, would be working, combing stadiums and other venues making it safe before the crowds entered.

“With the increase in Rhino poaching, Terror and Sgt Naidu were deployed to the Kruger National Park to curb this scourge. Here again, Terror would sniff each vehicle that entered or departed for explosives and firearms,” said W/O Marimuthu.

Terror became part of the Marimuthu family.

When Terror was medically boarded, he had lost the sight in his right eye and his partner, Sgt Naidu, had to make his sad boarding call and it was with a heavy heart that Sgt Naidu drove Terror out of the unit for the last time.

To Sgt Naidu, Terror was not just a K-9, but a faithful partner of eight years.

It was at the end of his tenure in the SAPS that Terror joined the Marimuthu family who welcomed him with much love ensuring he enjoyed a well-earned retirement.

“Terror spent days in a loving home where his family showered him with love. His final days were spent in the family room enjoying the coolness of the air conditioner and at night he cuddled up on his comfy bed in the master bedroom. His meals were home cooked and he of course watched all the daytime soapies and major sports,” said W/O Marimuthu who became Terror’s new mum.

Rest in peace, Terror, truly man’s best friend.
