ANTI-CORRUPTION and ethical leadership were the crucial messages shared among the speakers at the Fraud Awareness seminar at the Durban Exhibition Centre recently.
The seminar was held as part of an International Fraud Awareness week by the eThekwini Municipality with its partner, the Association for Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). The initiative is aimed at creating a meaningful platform to cover issues of fraud and corruption, and encourage all role players to elevate good governance.
Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala, who spoke on behalf of Mayor Zandile Gumede, said rampant fraud and corruption threatened the sustainability of public resources and service delivery.
He said the eThekwini Municipality, through its Fraud and Anti-Corruption Policy, aims to build an ethical and corrupt-free municipality.

The eThekwini Municipality was the first to establish a Disciplinary Board which deals with cases pertaining to financial misconduct and brings officials to book. The Disciplinary Board aims to effectively and promptly curb fraudulent activities, corruption and maladministration within the city.
The city has also established a Black Listing Committee that is responsible for investigating and making recommendations to council on the blacklisting of service providers who are seen to be underhanded in their business dealings. Once blacklisted, the provider will be prevented from doing business with the state.
The Municipality encouraged residents to report all forms of fraud, corruption, maladministration and human rights violations to the City’s hotline on 0800 202020 or email ombuds@durban.gov.za. All reports are strictly confidential.
