VIDEO: #BlackMonday protests stop traffic

The protesters plan to disrupt traffic once again, in Hammersdale this afternoon from 4pm till dark.

A vehicle blockade promoting #BlackMonday, heading towards Ashburton had caused a severe traffic backlog heading west earlier today.

The heavy traffic affected the N3 West approaching the Paradise Valley exit to Pinetown and was backed up all the way from Spaghetti Junction.

The blockade lasted just over half an hour.

Motorists were urged to use the M13 via Westville to avoid the heavy traffic.

South Africans are standing up to crime today. #BlackMonday, is an initiative for all citizens to mourn together, wearing black, in memory of all those who have died in violent crimes, including farmers.

The suggestion to wear black today was made by a devastated farm manager last Tuesday after Joubert Conradie was murdered on his farm near Stellenbosch in the latest spate of farm murder attacks to haunt the country. Seventy people have died in farm attacks since the start of the year. Every day an average of 52 people are murdered.

Meanwhile, a message going viral on social media is urging people to support the #BlackMonday initiative by wearing black today or to drive with the lights on from 4pm to late as a symbolic gesture for their stance against the escalation of crime in general.

“Crime, in all its facets, affects all of us regardless of occupation, race, political or religious affiliation.
Lets all make a stand against crime together as one nation. There will be a gathering taking place in Hammersdale this afternoon from 4pm till dark.  A map to follow.” read the message.
