GRADE 9 learner, Kate Meier, is Waterfall College’s SPAR Star of October.
Her heart for helping others, which is evident in her dedicated service to the school and the community, has earned her this title.
Kate joined the iThemba Reading Programme earlier this year.
This is an early morning reading session held daily with the Grade 1 and Grade 3 children.
It is a popular project initiated by Waterfall College HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) outreach committee, of which Kate is a member.
She said: “I have always wanted to do something with children. One day I want to become a Foundation Phase teacher, so I hope to gain experience in this way.”
Lorna Smith, Grade 1 teacher at iThemba Academy, said: “Kate has been a committed leader of the iThemba Academy Reading Programme. All of the children who read with her in the mornings, have improved their reading skills considerably. She has made reading fun and thereby encouraged them to try new, more complicated books.”
In her spare time, Kate reads a lot. She likes Christian books because they provide guidance for getting through personal situations.
She enjoys spending time with her family and preparing for the week ahead.
Her sporting activities includes netball, touch rugby and tennis.
Kate also volunteers for holiday camps and Children’s Church at the Kloof Methodist Church.
Asked about school life, Kate said: “I enjoy Waterfall College so much because we are rewarded in any of the areas where we can achieve, such as in community service. It’s a unique school.”
Kate’s proud mom, Brenda Meier, said Kate is a wonderful example of persevering through the turns and bumps that we sometimes face in our lives.
“She is a helper by nature and will go out of her way to ensure that those who are in need, are helped.”
Teacher in charge of HOPE outreach at Waterfall College, Jayne Cansfield, said: “Kate is a young lass with such compassion. She loves working with the little iThemba children in our Reading Programme and participates in all our HOPE outreach projects with such passion and enthusiasm. She really is a true example of selfless service.”
