Lovely Mandy achieves all-round success

Hillcrest High School has chosen Grade 11 learner, Mandy Pitchers, as its SPAR Star of the Month.

HILLCREST High School has chosen Grade 11 learner, Mandy Pitchers, as its SPAR Star of the month for her confidence and capability.

Mandy was recently awarded 90 per cent for her Grade 8 piano exam overseen by Trinity College, London – an excellent achievement.

She was also selected for the 2017 KZN Youth Choir and was selected to take part in the KZN Individual Debating Championships and was selected to attend the international Heart of Europe debating tournament held in the Czech Republic in the July holidays.

It is the first time that a Hillcrest High School debating team travelled overseas and they were the only school from South Africa to compete.

During a visit to the grand St Wenceslas Cathedral in Olomouc, Mandy was given an impromptu opportunity by the curator to play the magnificent cathedral organ. What a special moment.

Mandy was also a key member of the team who won the inaugural Daily News Varsity College High School Quiz in September – in addition to individual prizes, the team walked away with the coveted prize of R20 000 for the school and a R150 000 bursary for Varsity College for one deserving learner. An outstanding achievement.

Finally, at the recent Senior Speech night, where the Matric achievers were honoured, Mandy was awarded the Walsh Trophy for the Pursuit of Excellence – the first time a Grade 11 learner has received this honour.

It is no surprise then, when the announcements for the 2018 Student Leadership Team were made, Mandy was announced as one of those to take up a key student leadership position in 2018, that of deputy head girl.

Her new co-deputy head leader, Mpilo Vilakazi, described Mandy as “a lovely person and fun to work with.”

Though she said balancing time is always a challenge, Mandy’s advice to other learners is to “always put your best foot forward and try to do the things you enjoy”.

” Well done Mandy, you do your Hillcrest High family proud,” said Nicky Kidgell, the school’s marketing officer.
